It is no secret that the COVID-19 pandemic has hit hard across a range of industries this past year. Among the hardest hit has been film and television production. Now, with vaccines being administered, the industry looks to return strong in 2021.
While the pandemic has presented once-in-a-lifetime difficulties, speedy recovery may well present once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for many states. Recognizing the vast potential for job creation that renewed film and television production holds, the Twin Cities Local has been reaching out to our labor brothers and sisters to increase support for an effective film/TV incentive. On Jan. 12, the Minnesota AFL-CIO Executive Board endorsed a resolution calling for the creation of a transferable film tax credit program. The resolution was submitted by Wade Luneerg of UNITE-HERE Local 17. Luneerg has been a strong ally in this process, and we are grateful for his help.
Citing evidence from around the nation, the SAG-AFTRA Twin Cities Local and the Minnesota AFL-CIO believe film and television production could rapidly add well-paying jobs for Minnesotans in a range of occupations, from actors to carpenters, drivers, grips and electricians on set to hotel and restaurant employees off set.
As a proud member of the Minnesota AFL-CIO, the SAG-AFTRA Twin Cities Local commends the adoption of this resolution and looks forward to working further with our allies in labor as well as industry partners and the business community to bring much-needed jobs to Minnesota.
