LOS ANGELES (Sunday, May 8, 2005) – Screen Actors Guild (SAG) joins with the entire labor community in mourning the loss of Miguel Contreras, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO. Upon the news of his passing, SAG President Melissa Gilbert issued the following statement:

"The labor movement has lost a true champion. Throughout his life, Miguel Contreras served as a tireless advocate for workers. As leader of the L.A. County Federation of Labor, he literally rebuilt and revitalized the labor movement in Los Angeles. Miguel was also a great friend to Screen Actors Guild. He was a constant source of counsel and support on our legislative and organizing efforts. He helped us forge key alliances with other trade unions. And he stood by our union through every campaign we’ve waged in recent years, including our 2000 commercials strike, when he literally carried picket signs alongside our members.

“His vision of solidarity has forever changed the landscape of the labor movement in Los Angeles. His efforts provided new strength for labor in our region and a renewed sense of mission and purpose for the hundreds of unions he led. His legacy will be lasting. Now, it’s up to the rest of us to continue to work together, both in his memory and on behalf of the cause he embodied. On behalf of Screen Actors Guild, I want to extend my deepest and most heartfelt sympathy to his family and colleagues.”

Screen Actors Guild is a proud affiliate of the AFL-CIO.
