The Helping Hands Committee is one of the newest to form under the Portland Local Board’s leadership. It aims to encourage member engagement, education and help for those in need. As person-to-person contact became unsafe during the first few months of the pandemic, the committee created an unofficial Facebook page in order to continue outreach to members. The page operates on a daily schedule, five days a week: Financial Mondays, SAG-AFTRA Tuesdays, Health and Wellness Wednesdays, Shout-out Thursdays and Outreach Fridays. We want our members to know that during this time, there are many opportunities to find and get the help you need, whether that is childcare, education, emergency funds, union benefits and discounts, or legal aid.
The Northwest Oregon Labor Council has been continuing its dedication to helping members. The Workers Helping Workers food drives orchestrated several distribution events this summer in the Portland metro area on June 6 and 15 and August 25. The June 6 event was able to supply more than 1,000 boxes of food.
We continue to seek out new ways to help our members during this time. If you are interested in joining the Helping Hands Committee, please email us at portland@sagaftra.org. The Portland Local Helping Hands Committee and The Northwest Oregon Labor Council are wishing you and your family well as we continue to navigate this pandemic together.
