As we mark Veterans Day 2020, we find ourselves searching for the words to express our enormous gratitude for those who have stepped forward to serve our great nation.

Thank you for your service — the phrase does not do justice to sacrifices the men and women of the armed forces have made for the love of our country. Our members of the military have given up much in their role as America’s sword and shield. Military life does not allow for many of the freedoms civilians take for granted. Long deployments away from loved ones take their toll, and they must ever be prepared to give their very lives in support of the mission and their comrades.

From the beaches of Normandy to the mountains of Afghanistan, through war and peace, our fellow Americans have served with pride and distinction. Today is the day to honor their loyalty and commitment.

And while Veterans Day is about honoring past service, let’s also take a moment to remember those who continue to make daily sacrifices for our nation. American service members are stationed in more than 170 countries around the globe, including dangerous deployments in Central Asia and the Middle East.

And just as this has been a difficult time for all of us, it has been particularly tough for troop morale in some places, especially for those stationed far from home.

If you have the means to help lift their spirits, please consider giving to the USO. Your donation helps troops connect with their families and lets them find solace in entertainment during their downtime. The USO also assists service members who are transitioning to civilian life and provides therapy for those who need it. Visit uso.org/sagaftra and help if you’re able.

Strength in unity,
