Member-actor David Dean Bottrell discusses the ins and outs of auditioning in a changing industry.

With greater competition for available roles, auditioning is now more important than ever. To discuss the ways actors develop and refine their auditioning techniques, the SAG-AFTRA President’s Task Force on Education, Outreach & Engagement hosted the Impressive Auditions webinar on Oct. 28.

Veteran actor David Dean Bottrell (Modern Family) led the presentation. In addition to appearing in numerous stage and screen roles, Bottrell has helmed workshops for the SAG-AFTRA Conservatory, UCLA’s professional acting program and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. In his lecture and follow-up Q&A session, he discussed what he called “universal truths” to auditioning and ways to better approach self-taping.

“In my opinion, auditioning is just acting under less-than-ideal circumstances,” said Bottrell about self-taping. “Create an atmosphere that’s going to benefit you.”
