On Wednesday, Oct. 11, SAG-AFTRA members attended the long-awaited Triangle Fire Memorial dedication to the victims and legacy of the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire at the site of the historic fire in New York City. The memorial was installed at the very building that housed the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, at the corner of Greene Street and Washington Place in Greenwich Village, in which 146 people died.

The Triangle Fire Memorial tells the story of the fire in the languages spoken by the victims: English, Yiddish and Italian. It is one of the only memorials in America dedicated to workers. This monument honors the lives lost and reminds us of the importance of collective action. This tragedy that could have been prevented if the workers had been given safe working conditions, brought widespread concern for workers’ rights and created the modern labor movement.

SAG-AFTRA members attended this memorial during the ongoing TV/Theatrical/Streaming contracts strike. NY state Gov. Kathy Hochul, Acting Secretary of Labor Jenny Su and SAG-AFTRA New York Local Executive Director, Labor Policy and International Affairs Rebecca Damon addressed the attendees.
