Longtime SAG-AFTRA member and former steward, Gail Pennybacker signed off of the DC airwaves for the last time on July 20, 2012. Ms. Pennybacker has been covering local, national, and international news on Channel 7 for over 26 years. She started her career in Topeka, Kansas before moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma and then finally WJLA in 1986.

Ms. Pennybacker was the first to break the news of the sex scandal involving sportscaster Marv Albert, covered both 9/11 and the Beltway sniper, and hundreds of other news events throughout her time on the air. She also was sent to the Persian Gulf as a war correspondent to cover the War in Iraq. She has been recognized by a multitude of organizations for her outstanding reporting, including several Edward R. Murrow awards, several Dateline Awards for Excellence from the Society of Professional Journalism, Associated Press Awards and an Emmy. As a strong union advocate and shop steward for over 20 years, Ms. Pennybacker has also been involved in multiple contract negotiations and assisted in resolving many issues involving her WJLA colleagues.

While DC will sadly be losing one of its great reporters, the Washington-Baltimore Local of SAG-AFTRA wishes Gail the best in her retirement!
