Changes at WBZ-AM

The power of strong member involvement proved effective at WBZ Radio when iHeartMedia acquired the station last November. At a stationwide meeting, SAG-AFTRA members were assured by iHeart their jobs and union contracts were safe. Just hours following the meeting, iHeart did a complete turnaround, informing members that CBAs wouldn’t be honored and all would have to reapply for their jobs. Within days, another station meeting was held. Nearly all broadcast members at WBZ Radio attended, demanding iHeart reverse its position. SAG-AFTRA members prevailed and a transitional contract was approved with no one having to reapply for their jobs. The battle continues, however. In recent weeks, a long-time anchor has been let go and hours for part-timers have been cut. This, as negotiations get underway for a full contract.
