The SAG-AFTRA National Asian Pacific American Media Committee was a sponsor of the 2024 Center for Asian American Media Film Festival, better known as CAAMFest, in San Francisco from May 9–19. Among those seen on opening night at the Palace of Fine Arts and, later, at the gala at the San Francisco Asian Art Museum, were San Francisco-Northern California Local member and APAM Committee member Rajiv Shah, with his wife and content creator, Kim Ocampo-Shah.

Unique to this year’s program, filmmakers in attendance had the opportunity to attend the CAAM Filmmaker Summit, held at event venue Four One Nine on May 10–11. As part of the summit itinerary, CAAM also set up office hours at the San Francisco Film Office to introduce young filmmakers to various industry leaders. Among those leaders were SAG-AFTRA SF-NC Local Assistant Executive Director Dee Dee Escobedo and Local Business Representative Shinhong Byun, who discussed the accessibility of professional talent through the low-budget agreements. Representing the sponsoring committee, Rajiv Shah was also in attendance to provide filmmakers insight into the benefits of working with professional performers.

Many of the producers, directors and writers who attended the summit were excited to have their questions about the signatory process answered, with many noting they had future projects coming down the pipeline. The summit proved to be helpful in demystifying the union’s updated contract terms and simplified signatory process.

The festival concluded on May 19 at the New Parkway Theater in Oakland. SF-NC Local member George Ison was among those in attendance.
