Two men and two women stand next to the two collection bins. On the wall behind them are letters that spell out "Happy Earth Day."

The San Francisco-Northern California Local marked Earth Day 2024 with a clothing donation drive. Suggested by SF-NC Local member Nadia Flamenco with the intention of “gathering union actors committed to environmental action,” the drive ran for five weeks and donations were accepted and distributed by San Francisco-based St. Anthony’s Foundation.

Rajiv Shah and Solana Paz, SF-NC Local Board members and Conservatory Committee co-chairs, were excited to support the concept of gathering members in an effort to reuse and repurpose resources, while engaging with the local office and giving back to the surrounding community. Paz tied in a film theme to the drive, by suggesting donors pick a bin to donate to based on their favorite movie, Barbie or Oppenheimer, and Shah encouraged local members to post their participation to hashtags, #SagAftraSFNC and #SagAftraEarthDay.

Shah explained, “It was a small event that ultimately had a large impact, and the drive communicated our intention to serve and connect. Our members responded in kind and filled the donation bins to the brim. The clothing our members so thoughtfully donated went to St. Anthony’s Foundation, an organization which has distributed 12 million outfits at no cost to those in need in the San Francisco Bay Area.”
