Covering the Story of Race

Dec 01, 2020 - 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM PST

Where: youtube.com/sagaftra

To watch, please click here or cut and paste this URL into your browser: https://youtu.be/pMwv5Por4Lg

Host:
SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris

Moderator:
Carolyn Tyler, Retired Anchor & Reporter, ABC7 San Francisco

Special Guests:
Tahman Bradley, Anchor & Political Reporter, WGN Chicago
Lucy Bustamante, Anchor & Reporter, NBC/Telemundo Philadelphia
Emily Elena Dugdale, Veterans/Criminal Justice Reporter, KPCC LA

This year has been like no other. From the global coronavirus pandemic to the Black Lives Matter movement to protests following the killing of George Floyd, the news media has played a critical role in shaping how we understand these stories. However, these crises have also exposed challenges in newsrooms themselves, including a lack of racial diversity in newsrooms and inclusive editorial assignments that could help tell these stories more effectively. The media is being challenged to cover issues of diversity, equity and inclusion in society while reflecting on whether there is enough diversity in broadcast news itself, and if the right people are telling the right stories.

Join SAG-AFTRA President's Task Force on Education, Outreach & Engagement for our latest livestream in which we will discuss some real-life examples of media coverage; unpack issues around the need for diverse voices when reporting on crucial issues; examine how stories are assigned, shaped and covered in the newsroom; and discuss best practices of telling stories better.

Due to time limitations, not all questions will be addressed during or after the program. This PTEOE livestream will have an ASL interpreter and is live captioned.

This program will be recorded and may be later shared in whole or in part on SAG-AFTRA’s website, podcast and social media channels.
