SAG-AFTRA Foundation Opens Meryl Streep Center for Performing Artists

The SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s Meryl Streep Center for Performing Artists has officially opened its doors on the penthouse floor of SAG-AFTRA Plaza at 5757 Wilshire Blvd. in Los Angeles. A brand new, state-of-the-art facility with cutting-edge technology and equipment, the Foundation’s new center is designed to support a wide range of educational and performance endeavors to help SAG-AFTRA members nationwide develop their careers and hone their craft.

The Foundation’s Board decided to show appreciation for Meryl Streep, the most generous donor in the history of the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, by naming the new facility in her honor.

Courtney B. Vance, president and chairman of the board of the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, expressed his enthusiasm about the opening: “Meryl Streep has been quietly supporting the Foundation and her fellow members for decades. When crises hit in recent years, she was the first to step up in a massive way to support artists in dire need. We wanted to give something back to her for all she has done for our community,” he said. “The Meryl Streep Center for Performing Artists embodies the spirit of dedication, passion and excellence that Meryl herself brings to our craft, industry and the world. The Center will not only train and inspire the performing artists of tomorrow but also serve as a beacon of hope and opportunity for all who aspire to create and perform. We are incredibly proud to have built this dynamic new home for our community and look forward to the incredible work that will emerge from within these walls.”

The crown jewel of the Center is the state-of-the-art, 100-seat Tom Hanks & Rita Wilson Screening Room, named in honor of two additional top donors of the Foundation who have given generously to the Foundation’s Emergency Financial Assistance Program. This cutting-edge screening room, powered by LG, hosts the Foundation’s free Conversations programs and The Business panels. In this intimate space, SAG-AFTRA members will experience film and television on a 4K LG Miraclass screen with DCP technology and immersive surround sound.

The seats in the screening room are named in honor of SAG-AFTRA members who made significant donations to the Foundation’s Emergency Financial Assistance program. The naming of these seats is a way to recognize and honor the members who gave back to their community in urgent need, inspiring others to do the same when they are able.

The Meryl Streep Center also includes the relocated and renovated Don LaFontaine Voiceover Lab, no longer located on the mezzanine floor of SAG-AFTRA Plaza. The DLF Voiceover Lab provides members with the latest audio technology and equipment to record voiceovers, perfect their techniques and work on projects ranging from animation and video games to commercials and audiobooks.

In addition, several featured spaces in the Center are named after major donors who contributed $1 million or more to the Emergency Assistance Program. The Foundation found it crucial to recognize these generous benefactors, as their contributions provided essential support to performers during challenging times. This recognition serves as a testament to the power of community, the importance of giving back, and highlights how individual efforts can have a profound impact on the collective well-being of our community.

The On-Camera Lab is another cornerstone of the Center, offering members the chance to record free self-tapes and develop their on-screen skills. The On-Camera Lab is complete with professional camera, lighting and sound equipment. Members can record auditions with the help of experienced staff, who can also serve as readers and provide constructive feedback.

Complementing these specialized labs is a versatile classroom space, where a variety of Casting Access classes and The Business Small Group Sessions are held in person and online. These educational programs are led by industry professionals and experts, covering everything from monologue/scene workshops and audition preparation to career management and industry insights. The classroom environment fosters learning and collaboration, encouraging members to share experiences and learn from one another.

The Meryl Streep Center is more than just a professional development facility; it is a vibrant community hub where members can connect, collaborate and grow together. By providing free access to these top-tier resources and programs, the Center ensures all members have the opportunity to pursue their artistic goals.

The Foundation’s Meryl Streep Center for Performing Artists is poised to make a significant impact on the SAG-AFTRA community. It stands as a testament to Streep’s legacy, offering a nurturing environment where performers can develop their craft, build meaningful connections, and pursue their passion for the performing arts. And by opening the Center’s doors, the SAG-AFTRA Foundation is making a lasting contribution to the artistic community and shaping the future of the performing arts.
