Hutchins is seated at a table in a nondescript room. She wears a cream-colored blazer and bridges her fingers together as she intently looks to her left at an unseen speaker. Positioned before her is a microphone and underneath her hands are papers. Paper name placards for Hutchins and Vanhuynegem are visible.

The union shows its support for international standards of labor.

Journalist and SAG-AFTRA Washington-Mid Atlantic Local broadcast member Tanya Hutchins helped represent the union during a congressional briefing held in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 18.

The briefing, “Confronting Forced Labor,” was held by the International Labour Organization, an agency of the United Nations working to advance social and economic justice through establishing international labor standards. During her introduction, Hutchins spoke about the union’s ongoing support of fair and equitable labor.

“We are committed to global efforts to eradicate forced labor and to uplift labor organizations throughout the globe,” said Hutchins. “We know when workers have a voice and access to collective bargaining, more have access to fundamental rights and freedom at work.”

Also present were U.S. Reps. Brad Sherman and Linda Sanchez, who both gave opening statements. Panelists included Chief of the Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work Branch of the ILO Philippe Vanhuynegem; ILO Technical Specialist with the ILO Project Office in Qatar & ILO International Labour Standards Department Alex Nasri; and AFL-CIO Specialist, Trade and Economic Globalization Eric Gottwald.

A reception followed the event.
