SAG-AFTRA is an American union representing over 160,000 actors, announcers, broadcast journalists, dancers, singers, stunt performers, voiceover artists and other media professionals.

As a member, you may be wondering how to land bigger acting roles. Here are some tips to help you develop your acting career:

  1. Continue training. There are many acting programs and schools in major markets that can provide you with the training and education you need to succeed in the industry. Look for programs with a strong focus on the craft of acting and opportunities for practical experience.
  2. Build your resumé. Participate in local theater productions, student films or other SAG-AFTRA low-budget projects to gain proficiency and build your portfolio. This will help you stand out when you are applying for more acting roles.
  3. Network. Building relationships in the industry is key to getting your foot in the door. You should also attend industry events, such as film festivals and screenings, in order to meet other actors, directors and producers.
  4. Get an agent. An agent can help you find roles and negotiate contracts. Look for one who has a good reputation in the industry. Click here to find SAG-AFTRA Franchised Agents.
  5. Be prepared. When you audition, make sure you have a strong understanding of the character and the script. Practice your lines and be ready to improvise if necessary.
  6. Be patient. Breaking into the industry takes time and persistence. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t land a role right away. Keep working on your craft as you continue to build your resumé, and eventually, the right opportunity may well come along.
  7. Use SAG-AFTRA resources. As a union member, there are many opportunities for you to get access to SAG-AFTRA webinars and exclusive training via the SAG-AFTRA Foundation. Be sure to download the SAG-AFTRA Member App. Check out the free Entertainment Community Fund services. Make sure to constantly update your iActor profile and use your virtual membership card from your app when you are on set.
  8. Be professional. Be on time, be respectful and courteous, and always give your best effort. The more professional you are, the more likely you’ll get hired for bigger roles.
  9. Build your toolkit. As an actor, you should be able to adapt to different roles and play different characters. Take classes, workshops and learn new skills that can make you more versatile and increase your chances of getting hired.
  10. Stay up to date with the industry. Keep an eye out for new casting notices and opportunities. Read union magazines, subscribe to the SAG-AFTRA YouTube page, check out local news articles and industry publications, and listen to the SAG-AFTRA podcast. Follow actors, directors and producers on social media.

Breaking into a show business career is not easy. However, by following these tips and staying dedicated to your craft, you can increase your chances of success. Remember, the industry is constantly changing, and you need to be flexible and adaptable in order to succeed. Keep pushing forward and never give up, and you may just find yourself with a big screen or television role in no time.
