When you’re employing young performers on set, it’s not just a workplace; it’s also a learning and growing environment for them. They’re furthering not only their craft, but also they’re growing and in their profession. It’s really critical that they want to be listened to and treated with the same respect as any other professional performer.

Young performers play an integral role in film and television productions, and are vital workers within the industry as a whole. For SAG-AFTRA, it is important that they are not only protected while working on set, but that their work environment helps them feel empowered as professional performers.

To better address the union’s work toward supporting young performers and to better verse them on the ins and outs of working on set, the SAG-AFTRA President’s Task Force on Education, Outreach & Engagement hosted Young Performers: Rules on Set on Jan. 10. SAG-AFTRA Executive Vice President Ben Whitehair hosted the livestream with guest presenter, SAG-AFTRA National Director, Background & New York Entertainment Contracts Stephanie Perry.

Perry opened her presentation by outlining state child labor laws and contract provisions for child performers within the SAG-AFTRA Theatrical Agreement. Topics included work hours for young performers, on-set schooling and tips for parents and guardians. In the Q&A that followed, she provided helpful information on the Coogan Law, meal breaks and rest period concessions, and advice for other common scenarios young performers may experience while working.
